NR: Who Is Today’s Harry Truman?
Fred Schwarz at National Review has a terrific post, detailing who he feels is the Harry Truman of 2008. He compares the 33rd president with today’s White House occupant, along with Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton (why, I’m not sure, given that she isn’t a past or future president - at least in 2008), Barack Obama and John McCain. It is a good read, that ends with the following paragraph:
“Like most historical parallels, similarities between Truman and today’s politicians can be taken too far. Politics and government have long since become big business, and there’s very little room for an authentic Truman figure today. But when it comes to combining down-to-earthness (real or fake) with a talent for political nitty-gritty, John McCain is the closest thing on today’s national scene to a Harry S. Truman for the 21st century.”

Unfortunately, George W. Bush had a lot of potential to become this generation’s Truman, but it was not to be. On too many issues, such as the rapid rise of federal spending, Bush made the wrong choices that did nothing for he or the nation in the long-term.
